10/10
My first born had no issues with feeding, my daughter however has been struggling. Until I found these! The level 1 flow that comes with the dr.brown bottles was way too quick. I found the premie nipple and they have been a life saver! She is a lot calmer at feeding time and less spitting up, painful burps and gas! She is 6 weeks now and we recently switched to the level T transition nipple with success. I highly recommend this to any parent that is struggling to find the right flow! The dr.brown happy paci has also been a great investment. It helped my little one get used to the nipple shape that doctor brown offers.

My daughter was on Dr Browns from birth because it was closest to the nipples in hospital and suffering from reflux. At two months, she started clicking while eating, and she never really did keep all the milk in her mouth. I’m sure it’ll take a while to adjust to the wideness of the nipple but already know milk has spilled out and once I realize the vent has to line up with the notch on the ring, she down to 2 ounces no issue I’m very excited to see how this helps her reflux since this does not just flow into her mouth she can stop and breathe, and I think that helps a lot, choosing the right nipple flow is important I will say.

Why Is Choosing The Right Nipple Important?

Choosing the right nipple for your baby involves considering shapes, sizes, and flow speeds that align with their sucking style and strength. Experimentation may be necessary to find the best match. The hole size in the nipple dictates the milk flow speed, and selecting the correct size is crucial to prevent issues such as feeding too quickly, too slowly, or swallowing excessive air. A perfect match in nipple selection can transform the feeding experience.

Feeding Pace

Every baby has a feeding style. Some may need a slower bottle nipple or a faster one depending on their pace. The pace may not match their age or size nipple, as recommended on the bottle packaging. Babies who are fed by both breast and bottle may enjoy a slower-flowing bottle nipple. This helps match the flow rate of human milk during breastfeeding.

Feeding Problems

The wrong nipple size can make your baby eat too quickly or slowly, leading to problems during feeding. For example, a baby might get frustrated by a too-small nipple and not eat enough. Nipples that are too big can cause gagging, spitting up, coughing, or digestive issues.

Nipple Material

Most nipples are made of clear silicone. Some nipples are made with latex, which could cause an allergic reaction in some babies.

Nipple Shape and Length

Nipple length can be a factor as well. If the nipple is too long for your baby, they may gag. If it’s too short, they may have trouble keeping it in their mouth. Some experts recommend that breastfeeding babies must latch on a nipple that has a gradual versus an abrupt widening to the base.

Flow Rates

Nipples may look the same but do have different flow rates ranging from slow to medium to fast. These stages show how milk flows through and are defined by the size and number of holes. It’s important to match the flow with your baby’s growing appetite and feeding skills. Too slow could be frustrating for your baby and too fast could lead to gulping or swallowing air.

Safety

Nipples that are weak or worn out are more likely to tear or be a choking hazard. They must be replaced right away. To test a nipple’s strength, pull hard on the end of the nipple. This is called the bulb. The nipple should return to its original shape. If it does not, throw it away.

Types Of Nipples Available

Finding the perfect match for your baby can seem daunting. Understanding the different types can simplify the process:

Type of NippleCharacteristicsSuitable for
Slow FlowDesigned to release milk slowlyNewborns and slow feeders
Medium FlowMedium-paced milk releaseBabies between 3 to 6 months
Fast FlowAllows milk to flow quicklyOlder infants who can handle more milk
Orthodontic NippleShaped to encourage natural tongue movement and jaw developmentBabies who need extra oral development support
